Tuesday night was a busy day, mostly of school work, but it was still fun. But of course we found room for some shopping. After class we went to get some things in Oxford and we went to Cath Kidston, a place we have been multiple times. I would suggest a look on their website, but I don't want to get you excited then have to look at the shipping. Anyways, before our busy night we all met together to celebrate a couple of people's birthdays, but mostly to celebrate our professor, Dr. Lynn's and Mrs. Lynn's anniversary. Thirty years! It was so much fun to all hang out together. We had ice cream, cake and even had some special guests. Dr. Money showed up with his grandkids. We thought it was planned, but apparently Matt just ran into them and invited them to our party. Funny.
Wednesday was the day before we went to London and that night we all had a barbecue in our backyard. I don't know why we hadn't done it sooner! It started out kind of rocky. One of the guys on our trip, Matt, got chased by an older drunk woman. I will attempt to retell it just like he told us last night, it is hilarious.
Matt said he was having a great day, just happy with the world and on a spiritual high when he saw this old woman. He smiled at her, but she yelled back at him some not very nice language. Matt did a double take and said, "what?" and she repeated it. He was a little offended, but continued to walk away and ignore her. Apparently she was having none of that, because she started to follow him walking. He tried to go down a street, thinking surely she wasn't following him, but as he starting walking faster, so did she, and when he started running, she started sprinting after him. He was sprinting back towards our house yelling at the people inside to open the door for him, with the elderly drunk woman sprinting after him. Got the picture? I thought it made a very funny one. Matt gets inside and she is looking all in our windows, very crazy. Well everyone else is in the backyard for our barbecue and somehow she gets back there and starts talking to Dr. Stewart too. We eventually got her to leave. Matt described this as a low of the trip, but Dr. Stewart said "Another man's low, is another man's high." Its great to hear Matt tell it in person, if you know him you should ask.
Anyways, our barbecue was fantastic. We all joined together in our backyard, making kebabs, chicken, asparagus and bread. And of course, balsamic vinaigrette. The past few days, we have dipped everything in it, especially Lindsay, and I don't know why. One guy, Landon, made salmon and lemon, showing everyone up. Afterwards we got out a guitar and Dr. Stewart and a couple of guys played guitar for a long time. Wagon wheel was one song we played and out of the blue, Matt whips out a harmonica. So awesome, but we died laughing because it was completely random. We stayed out there for a really long time, even playing some good Texas country, even though we had to go to London the next day.
Sorry for all the commentary with ZERO pictures. I know it is rough. So here we go. On Thursday we went to London again for a business trip. We started out at John Lewis Partnership, the larges co-op business in the UK. It was interesting to hear about how a business works where the employees owned the company. It seems like a really smart way to do business. After we had lunch, we went to the Royal Mews of Buckingham Palace. Basically it was the stables and places where the royalty keep their fancy cars and carriages, like this one on the left.
This is the gold carriage. I think it said it was about 4 tons heavy. They use it for coronations and a couple of weddings. It is so grand, even more so in person.
This isn't that good of a picture, but a carriage drove by while we were touring. Most exciting thing about it. It was impossible to tell who was in it, but I just couldn't believe that they actually do that still. Maybe it was the queen, who knows!
After the Mews, we just turned the corner and we were at the front of Buckingham Palace. I got a really good pic of Hall in the bottom left of this one. Anyways, we couldn't go in but it was cool to look at. On the fence around it, there was about barbed wire where one strand was about 2 feet thick. Not worth hopping over.
After Buckingham we went to the Bank of England. It was pretty cool, mostly because of the size. It took up at least a whole block but probably bigger. The whole thing reminded me of Mary Poppins, hence the title of my blog, Tupence a bag. Try getting that song in your head, it almost never goes away. So its in my head now.
Anyways, this picture is so funny if you knew. We went to this strange Italian restaurant in London. The waiters eyed you down, waiting for you to need something and they had pictures of every single thing on their menu. Like handmade cutouts, bigger than two hands as if you were blind. The food was good though so it was okay. A man came up to us and asked "Fresh ground peppa" or something like that. It seemed like a joke, but no one else got it. It was a random skit it reminded me of.
So the pot in Lindsay's hand was a pot they had out as decoration and she decided it was a perfect gift for her grandmother who was Italian. So she asks if she can buy it and for that and a spoon she paid 5 Euros and 1 pound. They took Euros too! Strange place. Oh and Bre was wearing a dress, a sweatshirt and a poncho, even though it was not raining. At all.
After dinner we went to see Wicked!! It was fantastic. Also because Lindsay bought the pot, she had to walk into the theatre with it. The guys at the entrance to the theatre kept eying her pot and saying "You didn't bring any hot food with you tonight did you?" We died laughing. The guy behind us in line laughed for a while too.
When we got to the theatre we ran into the Stewarts and Lindsay begged them to take the pot back to Oxford so she wouldn't have to carry it to Wimbledon the next day. We kind of hoped they would not agree to it.
So, Wicked. It was fantastic and the singing was beautiful. Such a touching story and characters and the way the story ended was so sweet.
After the play we headed to our hostel...that we booked for July 4th. Well we figured out at 11 o'clock that night but luckily we booked another hostel right in time and took the tube there, which took about an hour and a half. It was amazing how it all worked out though because our new hostel was a 20 minute walk from Wimbledon. If we had stayed at the original hostel, we would have had to leave at 5 o'clock in the morning.
So as I said we were planning on making an early morning of it on Friday. We got up at 5:45 and headed over to Wimbledon and got there at 6:15. We didn't get in until 10:30. That may sound like a long wait but there were tents waiting there for Monday's tickets. Three nights, in the rain. Oh yes it was raining the entire morning practically. This all may sound miserable, but it was actually so fun. For the first couple hours we were waiting we took naps on each other while we listened to country music (we miss country music). Then it really started raining hard and we only had one poncho, no rain jackets, no umbrellas. So naturally, we all shared one poncho. It worked for a while and it was nice and cozy. Luckily, later they were handing out free ponchos. Let me tell you, ponchos are great. I sat in the grass in one for a few hours and it was a lifesaver.
After the rain subsided we finally got to see several matches. It was so cool to watch people so good playing live, even though I don't absolutely love tennis (Ignore the sleeping pictures on facebook, the match was being dominated by one guy, so it was clearly won.) Anyways, it was such a cool experience to go to such a worldwide event with the best of the best, even if it was in the rain. There's no one else I would have rather endured the rain with (This was us under one poncho).
